1722 Rosa Americana Penny, UTILE DULCI, Very Fine, Porosity, Martin 2.8-D.1, W-1268, R.5. 132.9 grains. GEORGIUS, UTILE, rosettes after date and AMERICANA, rosette distant from 2, long ribbons, ribbon points to GI. The surfaces are close to XF in details, but there is even porosity throughout, not terribly obvious without a glass and more visible near the peripheral letters. Still quite attractive and retaining a lot of character. A rarer variety of this beautiful design. Comes with a Colonial American Coin Club embossed Photo Certificate #142172 for this coin signed by Walter Breen and Don Taxay for member number 433 (presumably a Mr. O’Connell), and an associated typed, long, informative letter dated June 17, 1975, on Colonial American Coin Club letterhead providing extensive historical information on the Rosa Americana coinage. The coolness doesn’t end yet, as the letter is also signed by Don Taxay. Both Taxay and Breen were famous (and infamous) in different ways. Listed on page 44 of the 2020 Guide Book.
