1802 Draped Bust Silver Dollar B-6, BB-241, R.1, Narrow Date VF20 PCGS, Appealing Dove-Gray Surfaces! The 1802 Narrow Date BB-241 early dollar variety is more common than all other 1802 dollar varieties combined, making it ideal for type coin purposes and available in all grades up to Gem condition. It is, in fact, the most common of all Draped Bust varieties struck from 1798 to 1803. Among all early dollars including the Small Eagle reverse varieties (this variety has the Large or Heraldic Eagle reverse), only the 1795 Flowing Hair B-5, BB-27 and the B-1, BB-21 are more common.

This variety is readily attributed by the obverse die showing a wide space between the 8 and 0, as well as the broken right foot of the T in LIBERTY. Although this obverse was used on this die pairing only, the broken T makes it appear to have been struck about the same time as the 1801 B-3, BB-213 die pairing, whose reverse die shares those same broken T’s.

This lovely midgrade coin offers appealing dove-gray surfaces with no mentionable distractions on either side, other than wear consistent with the grade. The surfaces are a bit lighter than shown in our photos, more whitish-gray and very attractive. The fields show a tinge of gold under bright light, and each side offers a small patch of bluish-purple: around star 7-LIBE on the obverse, and beneath NITE on the reverse. Overall, however, the coin presents as largely untoned. An extremely attractive example for the grade, perfect for a nice circulated type set.
