1827 Square Base 2 Half Dollar XF40 PCGS Glorious Color, O-113a, R.4. In addition to the glorious color and clean surfaces that the TrueView amply shows, the O-113a is one of the rarer varieties of the year (among the 48 known; don’t try this at home unless you know what you are doing; we guarantee our attributions 100%), rated R.4 in Overton and Low R.4 in Steve Herrmann’s Prices Realized reference. Dr. Glenn Peterson picturesquely calls this the “erupting dentils” variety, since the dentil just below 7 in the date, and one two to the right from that, show erupting tines of extra metal (probably little postmanufacture gouges in the die). A neat radial die crack, rising from beneath the 27 through stars 13-12-11 before tilting towards the rear of the cap, also aids identification. Anyway. Great color, very scarce variety, how cool is that?
