1834 Large 4 Dime, JR-5, R.1, Largely Untoned XF40 PCGS CAC. A nicely preserved coin-gray prevails, complementing some light color at the date and other recessed areas. The JR-4 and JR-5 die marriages share one of the Large 4 obverses—there are three different ones—in this case with the crossbar (the little bit past the upright) partly broken off. The reverses are different, of course: The much rarer JR-4 shows the second S (ending of STATES) low, well below the preceding E. The JR-5, the second use of the obverse, shows the F in OF high and ERI all close. This nice XF coin would make a great selection for a type set, particularly if you like your coins lightly toned (and there’s nothing wrong with that).
