1834 Large Date, Large Letters Capped Bust Half, Brilliant AU58 PCGS, O-103, R.2. Those of you who follow our offerings closely (and thank you for that!) know that we seldom offer vintage coins that are brilliant. We believe that toning (or “oxidation” or “corrosion” if you’re a color-hater) is a natural occurrence for silver as well as copper. In fact, we know it is. Nonetheless, we love a nice, original coin such as this, mostly brilliant with just a breath of golden color near the rims and a completely unmessed-with appearance. There is nothing more than a hint of cabinet friction on the cheek of this coin, which has undoubtedly traded as Mint State before the advent of certified grading. We guarantee our attribution (as we do on all our coins), but it’s not on the slab.
