1836 Capped Bust Half, Early-State 50/00, O-116, R.2, VF35 PCGS Nice for Grade! This is the popular blundered reverse variety with most of the underlying 0 still visible left of the subsequent 5 overpunch, i.e. a fairly early die state (in later states this diagnostic can be faint or even disappear). This coin is awfully close to full XF and shows just a touch of obverse color which we think we’ve captured pretty well. This is the O-116 die marriage which is fairly common, although the slab just says “50/00” which narrows it down sufficiently. Later in the year 1836, the Mint would finally (a half-century after Boulton and Watt at the Soho Mint in Birmingham, England, for example) begin using a steam press that required a close collar and employed reeded edges.
