1837 George A. Jarvis Hard Times Token, New York, New York, Low-123, HT-284, R.1, MS64BN NGC. Ex: F.C.C. Boyd, John J. Ford, Jr. (pedigree on holder). A Hard Times Token that is also a merchant token or store card. The obverse resembles a Matron Head large cent with date 1837 and E PLURIBUS UNUM on a scroll. The reverse reads, around the rim, GEORGE A JARVIS WINE & TEA DEALER and in the center in five lines, 142 / GRAND / CORNER OF / ELM STREET / NEW YORK. A high-quality deep brick-red example of this token, one that could easily fit into the next higher grade level. The holder is a bit scuffy, no doubt due to the marvelous F.C.C. Boyd-John J. Ford, Jr. pedigree. NGC Census: 5 in 64BN, 2 finer (12/2021). The finest HT-284s at PCGS are one each in MS62BN and MS62+BN.
Ex: John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part 4 (Stack’s Bowers, 6/2004), lot 249.
