1854 Three Dollar Gold, High-End MS63 PCGS, Stunning First-Year Type Coin! Sumptuous luster and minimal marks for the grade characterize this high-end first-year-of-type example, which we were fortunate enough to acquire via a professional “crackout artist” who had submitted it three times trying for an MS64. We still think it is awfully nice for the grade, and are considering trying at least once more ourselves. Besides its popularity as a first-year type coin, the 1854 is technically a one-year type as well: The denomination DOLLARS is in smaller letters than on the 1855 and later issues. The strike is bold to full throughout both sides, and minimal marks contribute to the great eye appeal. “Life Is Too Short To Buy Ugly Coins.” The mintage of more than 138,000 pieces makes the 1854, along with the 1874 and 1878 dates, the most pursued for type purposes.
