1855 Large Cent, Upright 55, MS64RB PCGS CAC, Choice Surfaces. An excellently preserved and distraction-free example of this late-series Braided Hair large cent coinage, as well as an interesting Guide Book variety. Generous amounts of original red appear throughout both sides. Surviving Mint documents show that the Slanted or Italic 5s in 1850s coinage (of many denominations) was a characteristic of Mint Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, while the Upright 5s were the work of Mint apprentices. CAC Population in 64RB: 34 stickered/1 graded (3/2025).
