1856 Slanted 5 Large Cent, Impeccable MS65BN PCGS CAC Gorgeous Luster! As with all copper but especially these late-date large cents, which are still relatively available today for a price, we are extremely picky! This one stood out from the crowd with its sharp strike, creamy luster, no spots, and no other distractions. Some tiny indents on the reverse above ONE CENT are leftover tiny flaws that were in the planchet before striking.

Background Info: The story goes that old Mint Engraver James B. Longacre (1794–1869), who served as Chief Engraver at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia for the last 25 years of his life, favored the Slanted 5 style (sometimes called Italic 5), while the assistant engravers at the Mint favored an Upright 5 style, explaining the existence of the variants. You can also find both styles on 1855 large cents and 1856 (Type Three) gold dollars. Many other 1850s-dated U.S. coins bear one or the other style, mostly the Slanted 5 style.
