1860-O Seated Dollar Choice AU PCGS CAC Unabraded, Lovely Toning. Now with a CAC green bean (added after the photo was taken). Produced on the eve of the Civil War in antebellum New Orleans, the 1859-O and 1860-O Seated dollar issues were the first of the sporadic series since the 1846-O and 1850-O dollars. The later issues, while not abundant in quantity, saw larger mintages than the earlier coins, and some of them—perhaps most of them—survived until today by being discovered along with the hoards of Morgan dollars in the great GSA bag sales of the 1960s and 1970s. The 1859-O and 1860-O dollars are thus quite popular as relatively available type-coin issues from this historic series and mint. Unfortunately, their survival in bags also means that most examples today are genuinely hacked up and unattractive, many of them from later cleaning, dippings, or other attempts at “improvement.” This piece is exceptional both for its lovely, original patina (very un-baglike) and surfaces that are largely unabraded and show only light rub along with generous luster.
