1862 Copper-Nickel Indian Cent MS64 PCGS, Popular Civil War Date. The year 1862 was the first in which the horrors of the Civil War became all too evident to an increasingly fearful populace. Heavy losses at major battles including Shiloh, the Seven Days Battles, and Antietam made the prospect of a quick Union victory much more doubtful. Hoarding of coins and currency was widespread. Gold and silver coinage disappeared first, but even though the Mint shifted to a large production of cents, they too disappeared from circulation by summertime of that year.

Many collectors today like to put together collections of those historic Civil War issues running from 1861 through 1865. This coin is lustrous and well-struck and somewhat prettier than the Trueview, with glints of olive, gold, and rose prevailing and a bit of pale brown on the right-lower reverse.
