1868 Shield Nickel PCGS MS62, Great Type Coin. One of the (handful of) Shield nickel variety nuts out there could no doubt identify this misshaped-date 1868 coin as some variety; to us it is not one of the obvious Cherrypickers’ varieties, so it becomes just a neat and interesting (and relatively inexpensive) type coin. A couple of small dark spots on the lower shield account for the grade, but the color, luster, and surface preservation are more pleasing than one might expect at this grade level.
