1871 Indian Cent MS62BN PCGS Elusive Date. The decade of the 1870s is the most elusive among Indian cents due to the Mint adopting a “recoinage” policy. They recalled old copper large cents and half cents and rather than minting new ones simply included them in coinage totals, so the number of new coins struck was far less than the total reported “mintages.” This is a nice example for the grade, one we will probably send to CAC soon. An interesting die crack appears on the lower reverse. Strike now! PCGS Guide is $800.
