1880-CC Morgan Silver Dollar, 8/High 7 VAM-5, MS64 PCGS, Top 100 Variety. The first three years of Morgan silver dollar production provide endless fascination for collectors of the many VAM varieties, between the multiple different reverses, differing numbers of tail feathers (and overstrikes thereof), the 1880/79 overdates from three mints, and more. This is the VAM-5 Carson City 8 Over High 7 overdate, with a tiny nib of the 7 top peeking out above the second 8 and doubling on both 8s. The reverse shows a telltale vertical die gouge from the topmost arrow feather to the olive branch just above. Plenty of eye appeal is on display on this untoned piece, with sparking luster, considerable field-device contrast, and a few minor marks on Liberty’s cheek determining the grade.
