1882 Shield Nickel, Lustrous Penultimate-Year MS65 PCGS. The 1882 was the next-to-last striking for the Shield nickel, and 1883 saw both Shield and Liberty nickels of two types produced. The large mintage for 1882 exceeded 11 million pieces. Even though the Philadelphia Mint had an onsite die shop, they were clearly uninterested in replacing the obverse die that struck this piece, despite some neat die filling visible in the date and the motto, as well as several small die cracks. The reverse die was in better shape. Both sides of this untoned and freshly graded coin are highly lustrous for the type, making this an appealing candidate for collectors.
