1883-Ca MM 8 Reales Mexico MS63 PCGS, Seldom-Seen Chihuahua Issue. We were lucky enough (no, that’s not a strong enough word; extremely fortunate) to be able to buy an original hoard of gorgeously toned, completely original Mexico 8 Reales from various mints and time periods. This is the first one we are listing; as much as we love these pieces, all our coins must eventually move to new owners. This MS63-graded PCGS piece was struck at the Chihuahua mint, a fairly common issue but seldom seen with such incredible surfaces. Note how sculptural the strike is on this amazing coin. Mike Dunigan and J.B. Parker write in Resplandores: Cap and Rays 8 Reales of the Republic of Mexico 1823–1897, the standard reference to the series, that “all specimens of this date occur with the wavy or irregular fields.” The MM is for assayer Manuel Merino. PCGS Population: 1 in 63, 8 finer (2/2018).
