1889 Gold Dollar, MS65 PCGS CAC, Great Last-Year Series Issue. Although gold dollar mintages plummeted in the last years of the series, the few knowledgeable numismatists of the era recognized that the end was in sight and squirreled away considerable numbers for sale and as popular Christmas gifts, fortunately for us today. The 1889 gold dollar saw an emission of 28,950 pieces, the most struck since the 1874 saw nearly 200,000 pieces. This Gem CAC piece stands out with a bold strike over lustrous honey-gold surfaces that are free of distractions. CAC recognized the quality as well. This piece shows the reverse rotated about 20 degrees counterclockwise with respect to the other side, a frequency in this series. A great coin for a type set!
