Glowing fiery-orange surfaces predominate on both sides of this near-Gem Red and Brown matte proof PCGS-certified 1909 VDB, far and away the key to the matte proof Lincoln cent series. The original proof mintages have been hotly debated, but what is clear is that the 1909 VDB matte proof appears with far less regularity than the other matte proofs, the 1916 being second and the 1915 third in the rankings.
