1938-D/S Buffalo Nickel MS66 PCGS, Ex: John Whitney Walter ‘Mr. 1796’ Collection! We could go on and on about the legendary collector John Whitney Walter (1934–2018), often called simply John Whitney but far better known to the numismatic community as “Mr. 1796.” The May 1999 Stack’s auction of his 1796-dated coins was a simply stunning array of some of the finest (in many cases the finest) 18th century type coins in existence.
This more-modest offering is still quite cool and shows exceptional eye appeal. The S undermintmark is bold inside the D overmintmark, and great rose-gold color and exceptional luster provide a great finish to this neat coin.
