Austria 1935 Calendar Silver Medal SP64 Matte Finish PCGS. 40 mm (about 1.6 in.), 900 fine silver. Edge: A 900 (for argentum, Latin for silver). The Vienna Mint in Austria has produced calendar medals annually since 1933. This is a gorgeous example from near the start of the series, produced in an artistic design with lovely matte proof finish. This version in German a central figure of the Roman god Mercury (Mercur). The calendar medal, dated 1935 on both sides, shows the day of the week for each day of the year, along with: the 12 signs of the zodiac and their personifications; the dates of the full moons, spring, summer, winter, and fall; major religious holidays including Easter, Pentecost, Advent, and the Feast of Corpus Christi; and eclipses of the sun and moon. Signed by J. Prinz. Just a really wild and cool medal with such artistry and appeal that we couldn’t resist.
