France 1874-A 5 Franc Gorgeous Design and Toning MS64 NGC. Gad-745a, F-334, KM-820.1. 25.0 gm 0.900 silver, ASW 0.7234 oz. This is not one of the modern high-mintage 50 franc coins from the 1970s era; this is an 1874 5 franc example struck at the Paris Mint—basically that nation’s answer to the contemporary U.S. silver dollar. The Hercules group design is always popular, and this coin’s plum and purple toning is extremely appealing. About eight million of these were struck, compared to 27 million for 1873-A and 13 million for 1875-A. NGC Census: 9 in MS64, 11 finer (7/2020).
