Last night's Great Collections auction of Part 2 of the VDB Collection was full of some real surprises, most of them pleasant. The auction started off with a bang of one of our "trophy coins," a gorgeous 1909-S VDB MS66BN PCGS with CAC approval, which brought $6,075 plus buyer's premium (all prices quoted hereafter are without the added buyer's premium, which can range from 10% to 12. 5% depending on payment method). Great Collections once again did a superb job on the marketing. Prices were overall strong, with only minor exceptions, throughout the Part 2 offering. While the 1924-D cent issue is a well-known semikey, our 1924-D MS65BN PCGS CAC coin's final bid of $2,800 surprised even us. A 1918-D MS65BN PCGS CAC cent, formerly in the Abe's Coloring Book #1 Registry Set, garnered $2,050. And the 1931-S MS65BN PCGS cent, formerly in the Stewart Blay Collection (aka Red Copper), which came to us from WingedLiberty1957, brought an even $1,000. We did quite a bit of marketing for the sale in advance, and made sure to let several longtime collector-dealer aficionados of toned Lincolns know of the upcoming event. Great Collections did their usual competent job of handling the auction, although I must say I liked the older (Phil Arnold) Trueviews of many of the coins better than the GreatPhotos. The Big Wiener in the first sale was, unsurprisingly, a monster 1911-S Lincoln cent MS66BN PCGS with CAC sticker, which went for $6,250 plus the GC Buyer's Premium (which can vary from 10%-12. 5% depending on payment method). So say, around $7,000 all in. This was strong money in anyone's playbook, but competition is fierce for the Finest of the Fine. Carl J. Unger (1942–2020) grew up on the streets of Chicago collecting baseball cards and later, Gem Morgan dollars and type coins. One dealer actually grabbed back a box of gold coins that his employee had handed to me, saying he "wanted to see where gold was going to settle out at. We love writing and coins anyway, and these posts give us a chance to do two of our favorite things at once. In the first place, the Mint certainly did not issue "mint sets," the way collectors currently think of them (as one or two Uncirculated examples of every denomination and mint for a given year), until 1947. But an 1856 Mint Set, for purposes of our blog and for the PCGS Set Registry, would be one example of each date, mintmark, and denomination produced during 1856. Hopefully Uncirculated. The year 1856 was a banner year for coinage at the nation's mints. The Arrows/Arrows and Rays motifs that had prevailed from 1853–1855 were removed, and not only Philadelphia but four branch mints—Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans, and San Francisco—were striking coins. Gold only in the case of Charlotte and Dahlonega (which never struck silver coins), gold and silver in New Orleans and San Francisco, and a whole plethora of issues at the Mother Mint in Philadelphia. So far we have missed two coin shows due to the Covid-19 crisis, but Staying In is certainly the right approach. A perfect example of the difference is our British Monarchy seven-piece silver medals set produced—sometime between 1936 and 1952, we guess—by the longstanding medalists John Pinches Ltd of London. This is due not only to our long history with coins, like so many collectors Of A Certain Age filling up the two little blue Whitman folders with pennies plucked from circulation—but also because of our immense respect and admiration for President Abraham Lincoln, arguably our nation's greatest President. Nonetheless, we have also loved "U. S. type collecting" for many years. It is an area that we specialize in—or perhaps "generalize" is a better term. After all, what is a "type" coin? In the narrow sense of U. S. coinage—and given that almost every collector is budget-constrained in one way or another—we would define a "U. S. type coin" as a "typically common but exemplary specimen of a given U. S. coin design or series. " So, a 1913 (Philadelphia) Type 1 Buffalo nickel would be considered a good candidate for type collecting, due to their wide availability in high grade. S. coins.... - Categories: Smaug's Blog Sept. 1, 2019 A paean to toned copper Fans of copper/bronze coins will recognize the familiar PCGS/NGC shorthand grade designations for Red, Red and Brown, and Brown, applied most frequently to Mint State and proof large (and half) cents, Indian cents, and Lincoln cents to date. But what do they really mean? Surprisingly little, it turns out—unless you are working on a Registry Set, or watching your numismatic budget. A certified coin designated RD can range from the fieriest red to a mellow sunset-orange—and don’t forget those lovely canary- and saffron-yellows that sometimes appear on proof Indian cents. What is certain, though, is that certified Red copper is almost always going to cost far more than its date counterparts certified as Brown or Red and Brown. Take the iconic Lincoln cent (our namesake coin), the 1909-S VDB. In Gem Mint State (MS65) Brown, Red and Brown, and Red, respectively, the current PCGS Price Guide shows retail prices of $2,850; $3,000; and $4,500. So a Red example of this key date will theoretically cost you nearly 60% more than a Brown example. In MS66, the PCGS prices from Brown to Red double, from $4,500 to $9,000. And from MS67BN to MS67RD (if you can find them), the price more than triples, from $21,000 in MS67BN to $67,500 in MS67RD. A single 1926-S cent graded MS65RD (population 2) goes for $115,000 according to PCGS. The five-piece coin set, containing one each of the 1964 SMS cent through half dollar in the finest grade certified by PCGS, traded hands in February 2013 for $151,200, including commission, from seller David Schweitz to an anonymous Western collector. “This same set was recently offered in a major auction where the reserve price was not met. But our client was intensely interested in the set. We have studied this coin series in depth and knew David Schweitz owned the set. Updated Sept. 17, 2019 President John F. Kennedy lost his life to an assassin on Nov. 22, 1963. The Franklin half dollar series was only 15 years old—introduced in 1948—and an 1890 law required Congressional approval for design changes. Nonetheless, Mint Director Eva Adams demanded new half dollar designs from Chief Engraver Gilroy Roberts within a few days of Kennedy's death. No serious Congressional opposition materialized. The authorizing legislation passed Dec. 30, 1963; the presses began striking proof coins Jan. 2, 1964. The extraordinary timeframe was achieved only because Roberts had designed the Kennedy inaugural medals, used as starting points for the coins. The first proofs struck were the Accented Hair variety. The 1964 Accented Hair proofs are listed as FS-103 in the Cherrypickers' Guide by Fivaz and Stanton, and as Heavily Accented Hair in the Guide Book. They show a pronounced V shape in the hair just above the apex of the ear; an easier diagnostic is the broken left bottom serif of the I in LIBERTY. Supposedly Jacqueline Kennedy, the president's widow, asked for the hair to be remodeled. The 1964 Accented Hair proofs are really a one-year subtype rather than a "variety. (There have been minor hub changes and changes in metal composition over time. ) The Lincoln cent obverse of 2009 thus marked the first time in American coinage history that a coin design (or half of one, anyway) has endured for 100 years. The U. S. Mint introduced the Lincoln cent with Wheat Ear reverse in 1909, designed by Victor D. Brenner, on the urging of President Theodore Roosevelt to observe the 100th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln. Struck in Philadelphia and San Francisco, the first issues bore a small "V. D. B. " designer's initials on the reverse at the bottom rim. After an uproar arose, the initials were removed. The 1889 gold dollar saw an emission of 28,950 pieces, the most struck since the 1874 saw nearly 200,000 pieces. This Gem CAC piece stands out with a bold strike over lustrous honey-gold surfaces that are free of distractions. CAC recognized the quality as well. This piece shows the reverse rotated about 20 degrees counterclockwise with respect to the other side, a frequency in this series. It always amazes me each time I see this stunningly "wrong" Indian Head cent variety, much the same reaction I get when looking at a 1955 Doubled Die Lincoln cent (which is, admittedly, even more extreme). The repunched 4 in the date is so misplaced—widely separated both north and east—that it is a wonder the Mint personnel let these pieces go through ... But the 8 and 9 digits are also "massively repunched" east as well, according to the Fivaz-Stanton Cherrypickers' Guide, which also lists this as one of the top five varieties in the entire Indian Head cent series. This near-Mint State coin is one of 10 submissions so graded at PCGS, with 27 finer. A sumptuous, problem-free example of this well-produced date, with splendid prooflike fields on the obverse and near-prooflike on the reverse. The 1873 and 1874 gold dollars were produced in large quantities of the Treasury again releasing gold coins at par for circulation, a situation which had not existed since the Civil War ended it in 1861. But it would be four more years, until 1878, that gold dollars were actually released again, and the large earlier mintages depressed post-1874 production figures for years later (the 1875 gold coins are great rarities). If you look really well under a loupe on this piece at the upper reverse left wreath tip, you'll see a small interior die break, which is scarcely visible without a loupe (remember, at actual size, it's smaller than a pencil eraser), does not affect the grade, and in our opinion just increases the coolness factor of this coin. It's certainly a late-die-state reverse. Certified in an old green-label holder with the CAC green bean, to boot. PCGS Gold Shield Holder. We are very, very picky about the few Indian Head eagles we buy, since they are so popular as a series and more so as a type, and because regardless of grade, there is a lot of junk even in MS65 PCGS holders. So many of these soft, large gold coins show heavy hacks on the cheek or chin of Liberty, or on the high points of the eagle and the right reverse field, in particular. At any rate, this coin is a pleasant exception. We personally think it should be in an MS64 holder, but make no guarantees. It is free of any noticeable marks on Liberty unless we get out our 9x Eschenbach loupe, and then we see a couple of tiny ticks. There are also a couple of minuscule marks below the second A of AMERICA. Again, none of these are even remotely distracting. Just like any other coin you buy from us, if you don't like it for any reason, you have a seven-day, hassle-free window to let us know you're returning it in the same condition you received it. An extremely sharp strike on the obverse, excellent luster, and wonderful black cherry surfaces characterize this near-Gem Brown 1922-D cent. A couple of tiny obverse flecks and a bit of chatter at the upper reverse are likely all that separate this piece from a full Gem grade (and a $1,000 price tag, given the popularity of Brown Lincolns recently). The 1922-D is a favorite Lincoln cent date, with three die pairs known for the issue. One (the Strong Reverse dies, Die Pair 2, as here) eventually produced the 1922 No D cents, while the other Die Pairs 1 and 3 produced alternatively 1922 No D and 1922 Weak D cents but with Weak Reverse as well and other distinguishing characteristics. This lovely cent boasts a strong strike throughout and no trace of weakness on the crucial D mintmark. No nickels, dimes, quarters, or half dollars were struck at the United States' three operating mints in 1922: Only silver dollars were, at all three operating mints. Only Denver struck the cents in 1922. The United States' minor coinage total for 1922 was the lowest since 1877—another crucial year for cent collectors. VAM-9, "Speared O" Reverse. We just returned from the Dalton Georgia GNA show, where we couldn't resist this sensationally toned 1878-CC Morgan dollar certified MS63 PCGS. This is a coin that we unhesitatingly pronounce the most beautifully toned example of this date we have ever offered in our decades as a dealer. We'll let the photos speak for themselves ... This piece was acquired along with several other amazing coins from a collector who had set up at the show to sell his multimillion-dollar inventory—not a single one of which had ever been to CAC, as far as we could determine, as they had been held for decades (CAC began in 2007). A mark at the corner of Liberty's mouth likely accounts for the grade. This Superb Gem is one of the finest given the CAC green approval seal. Lovely satin luster abounds thoughout, with silvery centers complementing deep gold, sunset-orange, and red patina at portions of the periphery on both sides. This coin sold as Lot 5367 in Heritage Auctions' Central States Signature #434 way back in May 2007 for $690. (In fact, I think I probably cataloged this! ) Much more recently, two comparable examples, both MS67 PCGS CAC, sold for $1,393 and $1,306, respectively, in July and June 2022. But nicely toned Standing Liberty quarters are really tough to find, especially combined with minimal marks and good luster. I would say among 19th–early 20th century silver types, only Barber halves are tougher with those same criteria.
