Intermezzo: Part 2 Auction of the VDB Collection

Sept. 9, 2024—We’re gonna need more Port! Last night’s Great Collections auction of Part 2 of the VDB Collection was full of some real surprises, most of them pleasant. The auction started off with a bang of one of our “trophy coins,” a gorgeous 1909-S VDB MS66BN PCGS with CAC approval, which brought $6,075 plus buyer’s premium (all prices quoted hereafter are without the added buyer’s premium, which can range from 10% to 12.5% depending on payment method). Great Collections once again did a superb job on the marketing.

Prices were overall strong, with only minor exceptions, throughout the Part 2 offering. While the 1924-D cent issue is a well-known semikey, our 1924-D MS65BN PCGS CAC coin’s final bid of $2,800 surprised even us. A 1918-D MS65BN PCGS CAC cent, formerly in the Abe’s Coloring Book #1 Registry Set, garnered $2,050. And the 1931-S MS65BN PCGS cent, formerly in the Stewart Blay Collection (aka Red Copper), which came to us from WingedLiberty1957, brought an even $1,000.

Part 3 of the VDB Collection concludes next Sunday, Sept. 15 at Great Collections—and those three auctions constitute only half of our total consignment! You can find all Lincoln cents from VDB Coins on auction at Great Collections at any time by going to their home page and entering VDB Collection in the Search box. Happy collecting, and good luck with your bids!
