1948-S Booker T. Washington Half, Splendidly Toned MS67 PCGS, Elusive Series Issue. PCGS Gold Shield Holder. While the 1946-dated PDS Booker T. Washington half dollars saw net distributions (pieces struck less those later recorded as unsold and melted) in the several hundreds of thousands of coins (and in fact still turn up well-circulated occasionally in bags of common 90% “junk” silver), the later series issues, save for the 1950-S and 1951, were distributed in much smaller numbers—8,005 coins, in the case of the 1948-PDS issues. This has tended to be an overhang on the whole series and keep prices down lower for the later issues which are, in fact, quite scarce to rare in high Mint State grades. PCGS Population: 63 in 67, 8 finer (4/2024). This piece has not been to CAC that we know of.
