1880 Newfoundland 2 Dollar Gold MS61 PCGS Key, Superb Eye Appeal The coveted key to the complete Newfoundland two dollar gold set, the 1880 was struck with a tiny mintage of only 2,500 pieces, and few can compare with this high-end Mint State PCGS-certified example. We thought about sending this in to see if we could get an MS62, but we think customers prefer coins that are high-end for the assigned grade — which this one definitely is — rather than maxed-out slabs. The eye appeal is extremely nice, but a few small surface marks are expected, and a bit of dark toning near the obverse rim on the E of REG. Generous luster covers both sides, with lovely color ranging from golden-yellow to rich amber. Note the variety: repunching is bold at the bottom of the I in VICTORIA. PCGS Population: 10 in MS61, 11 finer (4/2013).
