1870-S ‘No Drapery’ Seated Half, Breen-4953, Delightfully Toned AU53 PCGS. OK, this isn’t actually listed in Cherrypickers’, but it is in Breen’s old standard reference. Three small dots where the drapery should be are all that remain, if anyone cares. But this coin will be valued for type and date purposes, not for obscure-variety reasons. These dies were “rode hard and put up wet” out in the Old West of 1870 San Francisco, and they are often undergraded due to die erosion. This piece shows generous luster and some pretty toning on both sides, but the softness of detail apparent is due to die erosion (hence the disappearing drapery), not overt wear. Only a tad more than 1 million pieces were struck of this issue, and few survive as nice as this one. Most found are VF to low XF. PCGS Price Guide is $900.
